Fire Emblem: Awakening introduced a new feature in the Fire Emblem series: Pairing up.

It acted pretty much as rescuing a unit, without needing a carry charge in the stats. It also increased the friendship between the units whenever they would fight, just as fighting side by side would do.

This feature looks like it's staying, as it continues in Fates. Pairing up a unit as one has its uses, but also has its cons. Pros being a stat increase, guard chance, extra attack chance, plus the continuing support growth between the units. However there's always the cons as in fewer moves in a turn, and not being able to cover as wide of a map as more units are.

Do you use it? Do you prefer single units or ones paired up? Do you plan on using it in Fates for most of the game, or just when needed?

Not using pair up is a death sentence in Lunatic mode.
For whatever reason the game is balanced around pair up bonuses which is why the enemy stats in Lunatic mode are ludicrous especially in the early game.

Thank god Fates balances it by splitting the stat bonuses and guard chance from the ally attacks and allowing enemy units to also use it. The enemy stats will mostly likely not be ridiculous in higher difficulties.
