Review guidelines

Like to write a review? Great! Here are some guidelines to keep in mind.
  • All the forum rules apply to your reviews.

  • Your review should be easily readable. A few minor errors are acceptable, though your review should use proper grammar/formatting (ie, using full sentences, comma's, periods, correct capitalization etc.)

  • No spoilers! Many people read reviews before they've played a game in order to decide whether or not they'd like to play it. Revealing crucial plot information, or the "big surprise" takes away any excitement it might have had.

  • Your review should be long enough to adequately cover the game. That means at least 250 words. Longer is usually better. Try covering each aspect of the sections mentioned (graphics, gameplay, replay value, etc.) in detail. Also, try to describe any modes of play the game has in detail. End with your recommendation to the reader. For example "I would recommend you only buy this if you're a fan of this genre" or "I would recommend you only rent this game." etc.

  • Your review must be your original work. Having a quote or two is acceptable, as long as you clearly describe it as a quote, and you say where the quote is from. You should also limit the amount of text you're quoting. A good way to think of it is "Is there more content from someone else than from me?" If so, you shouldn't post it.

  • Think before you assign a rating. Please don't put all "10" for every "really good" game you come across. 10 means that factor of the game exceeds all expectations, and is perfect in every conceivable manner. While nothing is truly "perfect", this is as close to perfect as games come, so please carefully consider whether a game truly deserves the rating you assign. In the same token, don't give games "0", unless they truly deserve it either. Ratings are a sliding scale, 10 isn't a "seal of approval", and 0 isn't a way to express "general disappointed". Also, please avoid general "bashing" of the game, words like "sucks", "crap", "worthless", "garbage", should in general be avoided, and if you must use them be very descriptive in why you feel that way.

  • Non-crucial information/lists: Please avoid using item lists, move lists, character lists, controls, cheat code lists, etc. The purpose of a review is to describe the quality of the game. Listing off objects or characters is tedious and doesn't really inform a person how good a game is.

  • Unrelated/personal information: The review is to talk about the game, not yourself. We're not interested in how long you had to save up to buy the game, how difficult it was for you to find, how you're feeling today, your contact information, etc. Anyone who wants to find your contact information can look on your profile.

If you're review fails to meet these guidelines it may be moved to reviews in progress, or deleted. For more serious problems (ie, blatant spoilers, being inappropriate) further consequences may follow.

Forum Rules (Updated December 13th!)

Updated*1. No Disruptive Posts: This includes but isn't limited to, blank messages, content-free messages, entering identical or near-identical messages, multiple messages that only include emotions, too many emotions, intentionally hard to read messages, (For example, ALL CAPS (You can have up to 2 words in capital letters OR 10% of your message. ), AlTeRnAtInG CaPs,Nospaces, exse s s spaces), messages that are unnecessarily separated into more then one message. Overuse of the color/bold/underline/size/ features (Please don't use over three font unless you're really trying to make a point, and you do so in a few words)

As far as "content free" messages go, this means anything that doesn't provide any new or additional information to the thread. Such as "I agree", "good thread", "huh", "hi", "okay", restating or rephrasing your or someone else's post, etc.

2. No Censor bypass: Due to their offensive nature, some words or phrases may be censored, or replaced with less offensive words. You may not attempt to bypass this censor by misspelling, inserting spaces, using look a like characters, or any other method.

Here are some other things regarding swear words. You may post the word if it is fully censored, for instance if "Walk" was a banned word then saying W-a-l-k, W a l k, W*lk, W@||<, Waaaahhlkk, and W***, would not be allowed. What would be allowed, ****, The "W" word, ****ed, ****ing, w'ed. You may indicate the swear words length, or it's first letter, not both.

3. No Advertising: No posting links to, or encouraging others to visit chats, forums, blogs, or anything where the site's content can be edited/added to by users of the site. Posting links to well known sites such as YouTube/Wikipedia/Photobucket is acceptable, as long set link doesn’t break other rules such as disruptive messages/offensive messages, and it isn’t an image or video where the main purpose is to advocate other chats/forums. Posting links to sites owned by video-game-info is acceptable. You may not have an advertisement in your signature. You may have a link in your homepage, but you may not send messages to draw attention to that link.

You may not post for sale/want ads, "Get rich quick" schemes, pyramid schemes, "Free" product "giveaways" .

You may not send a link if you're profiting or gaining, such as any referrer ID based site.

Also, do not post the same link more then once.

4. No Inappropriate posts/links/images: You may not post or encourage
others to post messages or links that are considered offensive. Some offensive things include but is not limited to, Sexual discussion ,discussion of pornography, anything else that might be deemed inappropriate for a younger audience.

Also an image may be deemed offensive if it contains a rule violation. Such as an profile/image that contains nudity/near nudity/graphic violence/a middle finger/swearing etc.

5. No Offensive messages/links/profiles: You may not post or encourage others to post messages or links that are considered Offensive (Kind of like the "Inappropriate" rule). Some Offensives things include discriminating against a person based on race, religion, sexual orientation, culture, ethnicity, handicap, nationality, or gender.

7 . No insulting/flaming:3You may not insult or flame a forum user in a way that is deemed very harsh/rude or just trying to hurt someone's feelings. Some examples are saying "You're dumb" or "You are a furry". Telling someone to "S TFU" "G TFO" "Screw themselves" "Kill yourself" or other "insulting commands" aren't allowed. You may insult people who have no relation to VGI, or anyone on VGI, such as a celebrity, or politician. You shouldn't insult people who frequent xat, as odds are they have visited VGI at one time or another. You aren't allowed to insult/mock a religion, sexual orientation, culture, ethnicity, handicap, nationality, or gender. It won't be considered flaming if you call someone by their username (Example: Calling someone named noob, noob).

Regardless of your intent, if you insult another user, it is flaming. Even if the user is a friend/your alternate account and knows you are joking around. There's no way for moderators to know for sure who is or isn't joking, and allowing friends/alternate accounts to flame each other would cause confusion about the flaming rule.

8. No Impersonating Users of this chat/forums: Impersonating means having a username that is identical or near identical to that person , or falsely claiming to be that person. This rule especially applies to moderators and administrators.

9. No posting/asking for private information: Don't post phone numbers, addresses, names, social security numbers, or anything outside video-game-info that a person wouldn't want to have posted. If it is something that the person has willingly revealed, like their own name through their username, or a recent message, then it’s ok to post.

Do not ask anyone how old they are.

10. No illegal activity: You may not post messages that violate the law. This includes, but isn't limited to linking to copyrighted ROMs, Software, music, text, video that have been uploaded without the copyright owner's consent.

Plagiarizing by taking large amounts of content. Short quotes (A few lines) is acceptable as long as you give credit for it, and clearly show it's a quote. Copying and pasting huge paragraphs that someone else wrote is not okay though.

Hack threats, death threats, or just about any type of threat to do something illegal isn't allowed either.

11. English only in this forum: This is an international forum, but it isn't a bilingual forum. The only exception is if you are saying a different language but it would still make sense in English, such as someone who says "This is what the game reads in the original Japanese text 'ヘネスノチトェアヤ}X^[ナ'' Or 'rulebreaker41 said 'Όλοι απορροφάτε πραγματικά σκληρά.'

12. Signature rules: [SIZE=2]Keep images that aren't banners 300 by 300 or smaller, No more then 5 smilies, No more then 4 links, keep banners around 600 by 250, keep signatures under 400 height, no more then 6 images that are over 50 by 50, no more then 2 images that are over 150 by 150, No animated images in signatures larger then 50 by 50, No words larger than size 5, no more then 20 characters/letters size 5, and of course nothing that violates the ordinary rules of the forum (other then advertising, but see advertising rules).

13. Stay on-topic: There are a lot of topics, please find the one most suitable for your thread. If it doesn't seem to fit anywhere else put it in "General". Also, don't make posts that are completely unrelated to the thread.

14. No intentional misspellings:Do not intentionally shorten or misspell words for convenience such as "liek", "u", "ur", "ppl". Please fully spell your words "like", "you", "your/you're", "people". Also, any form of "1337 sp33k" is prohibited.

Intentional misspellings are allowed if they are used as a quote, or for example purposes.

15. Don't make repeat threads: Don't make a new thread talking about the same thing described in someone else's thread, especially if that thread is on the first few pages. If a thread hasn't been made in months, or there's some reason why the results would be different now than they were when the thread was made (For example a thread asking what you think of the current president just after a new president has been made) it's generally fine.

If you're not sure whether the thread idea has been done before, use the search feature.

16. No underaged users 13:There is a law called COPPA. Which prohibits site owners from knowingly collecting data from people under 13 years old. So if you admit, or we somehow determine you are under 13, you may be banned. Do NOT joke about this or use memes such as "im 12 and what is this". It is still a violation of this rule and you'll still be banned for it.

]17. Give a warning for spoilers: Please do not reveal important parts of a plot details without a clear warning that is relevant to whatever you're spoiling. If the spoilers are in the opening post, warn in the topic title. If the spoilers are in a reply post, type "**Spoilers**" in easy to recognize, and stand-out font, with a large gap (several lines) between your warning and the spoilers. "fake spoilers", aka spoilers that aren't true aren't allowed either.

18. No trolling: Posting knowingly false information (Example: Press alt f4 for $20; Joe Blob is dating a rock), trying to mock belittle someone, or something they care about (Such as their nation, a sports team. Example: "luls we Americans are so fat" "Ello mate, where are the dingo's?", posting obviously useless questions (Example: “What is 1 1?”, “What color is the sky?”), creating false situations about someone (Example: Strokes Joe's hair, kills Joe, cybers Joe, licks Joe), posting links that are edited to portray another chat user in a bad light (Example: Posting a picture of someone with devil horns cropped onto them), intentionally mispronouncing names (Example: Hi merryman, I mean rayman). Asking questions that would be "flaming" given a certain answer might be considered trolling (IE, "Are you stupid?" "Do you have any life at all?")

As another note, please clearly state bashes of a game/countries/things people might care about as opinions. Saying “This game sucks” would be trolling saying “I found the game to be repetitive and uninteresting” is critical, but clearly stated as an opinion.

19. No infraction/ban evasion: Penalties were incurred by your own actions for a reason. If you were treated unfairly you may contact an administrator in order to resolve it. If you attempt to create alternate accounts in order to bypass penalties, (Ban, probation, infractions, etc.) you'll just receive a larger penalty. If you have any penalties on your account, and wish to create a new account, you must contact an administrator so they can transfer over your infractions.
